Our History

Our History

1950: The story of Tavcor begins on Embassy Street in North End, Port Elizabeth and the founding of Embassy Motors. It soon acquired the rights for the Volkswagen franchise for the entire Eastern Cape and opened branches in Uitenhage, Kirkwood and other regional towns.

1962: Ray Taverner purchased the business and relocated the main branch to Broad Street in North End; with workshops in Patterson Road near the Livingston Hospital.

1970: The VW/Audi franchise consolidated in Mount Road, North End; at that point this area was the geographic heart of Port Elizabeth.

1981: Ray Taverner passed away while travelling in New Zealand and the organisation was passed on to his sons; Alan, the eldest, and Clive, leading the Sales division.

1986: The main opposition VW Dealer in Port Elizabeth went bankrupt and was resigned by Embassy Motors.

1987: York Motors was added to the company’s portfolio and the Audi and Volkswagen brands were separated with the building of the Audi Centre.

1990: Brothers Alan & Clive launch a management by objectives (M.B.O.) strategy and acquire all the shares of the organisation. This event is marked with the renaming of the business to the Tavcor Motor Group.

1996: Autohaus is closed and the Volkswagen brand is consolidated into Mount Road; which undergoes a major make-over at this time.

2004: The Tavcor Technical Centre in Perkins Street was developed just around the corner from the Group Head Quarters. This centre houses the Audi & Seat service, H.R., group stock control as well as a 140-strong underground parking area.

2007:  Tavcor MotoRent was launched; this holds 70 retail car rental vehicles.

2008: The Suzuki franchise was taken over from Seat in Greenacres. A year later land was purchased on Moffat Street for the development of a new VW franchise.

2011: In June ground was broken and the building of a new VW business was commenced. In November Tavcor business interests in Port Elizabeth were consolidated with the purchase of Market Square Commercial in Sydenham.

2012 onwards: Tavcor is well represented at multiple sites in the Eastern Province and the South Western Cape.
