Highlights: Design-an-Allspace Awards Evening

The Design-an-Allspace Awards Evening was a celebration of creativity and community – as we gathered our extended Tavcor family together to showcase the talent of our local learners, announce our winners and thank all those who made this competition such a success.

This year, we asked primary school and high school learners in the greater Nelson Mandela Metro Area to add their creative touch to a Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace – for a chance to win a cash prize for themselves and their schools. Initially, we planned to give away R18,000 in total, but we received such a large volume of excellent entries that we chose to add an extra award category and bump the total cash prize amount up to R20,500.

2019 marked the third year that we have run this annual event, which kicked off in 2017 with a ‘Design a Kombi’ theme. For this year’s competition, we changed the theme to ‘Design-an-Allspace’ to tie in with the launch of the new Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace. And as this coincided with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, we asked our entrants to submit designs inspired by space.

Over the moon

During the competition period, which ran from May until September 2019, we were thrilled to receive close to 1,000 entries!

The judging took place on the 3rd of October. After following an intensive qualification process to shortlist the top 45 entries, our panel of 11 judges used a scoring rubric out of 25 points to manage the challenging task of choosing the winners in each category.

The top 45 entries were also entered into an online competition, where we asked the public to vote for their favourites. We were blown away by the number of people who showed their support for our local learners and voted online. During the 3-week period, we received an astronomic 13,000 votes!

A stellar evening

During the awards evening, we presented awards in five categories:

  1. Public vote – scholar
  2. Public vote – school
  3. Junior Primary (Grades 1 to 3)
  4. Primary
  5. High School

Special guests at the event included our top 45 finalists, school staff and parents from 11 schools in the Metro; our panel of 11 judges; the Tavcor team, including Dealer Principal Lisa Hundleby, HR Director Megan Stow and CEO Garrick Bowker; and members of the press.

Before celebrating our winners, we’d like to thank all our sponsors who made this competition possible – including Oracle Graphics, who generously sponsored our vehicle wraps; and Strategy Brand Imagineers, for all the online creative elements.
